24-Bit XImtool Available For Testing

The X11IRAF v2.0 release featuring XImtool support for 24-bit displays is now available as a beta release for general use from the following urls:

Limited internal-testing has shown this package is stable enough for wider testing within the user-community, however it should be remembered this is a Beta-release and some problems and platform-specific issues might still be found (but are expected to be easily solved). Known issues (and existing features for those not familiar with XImtool) are outlined in the release notes available at

IRAF V2.14.1 Patch Now Available

A V2.14.1 Patch release is now available for all supported IRAF platforms. This is primarily a bug-fix/new-feature release of the existing V2.14 system, however this patch also provides support for new platforms and synchronizes the IRAF releases across all platforms.

Highlights of changes in this release can be found in the README file as well as the patch v2141revs.txt detailed notes file. A key new feature of this patch is the support for FreeBSD and Solaris platforms on PC-IRAF systems, as well as the first official release of Sun/IRAF systems.

Existing V2.14 PC-IRAF systems can be upgraded by re-installing the IB and NB binary distribution for the specific platform. Additionally, the source tree will need to be updated by unpacking the patch1.tar.gz file in the iraf root directory. This patch file is needed to update help pages and other runtime files in the system.

IRAF Support at iraf.net

Discussions have been underway for a while within NOAO regarding how best to balance the needs of internal projects, the iraf.net support activities, and new projects. The result is a mutual collaboration in which IRAF development is resuming within NOAO on a modest scale, and the community support and development activities at iraf.net will be encouraged and supported for those NOAO employees supporting the site.

User support remains the primary responsibility of iraf.net. Users are encouraged to Register at that site post questions to the forums. These forums also serve as a searchable online archive of all email sent to the old iraf helpdesk.
