Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone J. roger P Angel UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract Measurement of the spectrum of polarization has proven to be a powerful tool in deciphering emission processes and source geometry in AGN. This program will extend these observations into the UV below 3000A. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. The spectrum of polarization for a large number of AGN of diverse type will be observed with the FOS spectropolarimeter. Targets include both low and high polarization QSOs, Seyfert galaxies of types 1 and 2, BL Lac objects, a broad- line radio galaxy, and a giant elliptical (M87). Clouds close to the nucleus in two nearby Seyferts will also be observed. NOTE: NGC 1068 HAS BEEN DROPPED FROM THIS PROGRAM - FEBRUARY, 1992. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The ST is needed to do spectropolarimetry below 3000A. The ST will also allow us to do spatially resolved polarimetry in the nuclear regions of NGC 1068 and 4151. NOTE: NGC 1068 HAS BEEN DROPPED FROM THIS PROGRAM - FEBRUARY, 1992. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Blazars are so rapidly variable that any observation must be completed within a few hours. The SV prerequisite programs for all FOS observations in this program are: Prop ID 2195 FOS Target Acquisition Tests All observations Prop ID 1317 Int./Ext. Wavelength Offsets 1st target Prop ID 1318 Spectral Flat Fields 1st target Prop ID 1320 Absolute Spectrophotometry 1st visit of bright targets Prop ID 1430 Polarimetric y-bases (lines 103,104) and polarimetric wavelength calibrations (lines 105,106) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Spectropolarimetry of QSOs, BL Lac objects, Blazars, Seyferts, and other AGN, are obtained in order to decipher emission and scattering processes and source geometry. Twenty-five objects are to be studied. NOTE: NGC 1068 HAS BEEN DROPPED FROM THIS PROGRAM - FEBRUARY, 1992. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
